BANGALORE: Looks like Infosys Technologies is finally going shopping, after having sat quietly on a huge pile of cash reserves — currently at about Rs 6,200 crore — for many years.
Industry sources say that India’s second largest IT services company has plans to launch a takeover bid targeting the European consulting major Capgemini. Agency reports from Paris said Capgemini shares rose 3.7% on Thursday as traders cited talk that Infosys could be interested in bidding for Europe’s largest IT services group.
The Infosys spokesperson refused to comment, but the firm has repeatedly said it was looking for "the right time, right price, and right target."
An official in a leading global consultancy said it could be "part of a natural progression of a fast growing Indian tech firm that is keen to make an instant impression on the global market. Look at what happened in the past: IBM took over PWC to strengthen its consulting business, while EDS went in for AT Kearney." Capgemini had bought the consulting division of Ernst & Young for $11 billion in 2000.
All such moves are seen to be efforts by IT companies to go up the value chain. "Prima facie, a deal with Capgemini will significantly increase Infosys’s credibility, enhance branding and push its revenue volumes," said a senior industry analyst. According to another analyst, Infosys’ consulting business has not yet made much impact in the market and the company has not been able to command the kind of premium billing rate that players like IBM, Accenture or EDS do. "So it makes business sense for Infosys to go with Capgemini from a market point of view.

Normalization
Normalization is a design technique that is widely used as a guide in designing relational databases. Normalization is essentially a two step process that puts data into tabular form by removing repeating groups and then removes duplicated data from the relational tables.
Normalization theory is based on the concepts of normal forms. A relational table is said to be a particular normal form if it satisfied a certain set of constraints. There are currently five normal forms that have been defined. In this section, we will cover the first three normal forms that were defined by E. F. Codd.
Basic Concepts
The goal of normalization is to create a set of relational tables that are free of redundant data and that can be consistently and correctly modified. This means that all tables in a relational database should be in the third normal form (3NF). A relational table is in 3NF if and only if all non-key columns are (a) mutually independent and (b) fully dependent upon the primary key. Mutual independence means that no non-key column is dependent upon any combination of the other columns. The first two normal forms are intermediate steps to achieve the goal of having all tables in 3NF. In order to better understand the 2NF and higher forms, it is necessary to understand the concepts of functional dependencies and lossless decomposition.
Functional Dependencies
The concept of functional dependencies is the basis for the first three normal forms. A column, Y, of the relational table R is said to be functionally dependent upon column X of R if and only if each value of X in R is associated with precisely one value of Y at any given time. X and Y may be composite. Saying that column Y is functionally dependent upon X is the same as saying the values of column X identify the values of column Y. If column X is a primary key, then all columns in the relational table R must be functionally dependent upon X.
A short-hand notation for describing a functional dependency is:
R.x —>; R.y
which can be read as in the relational table named R, column x functionally determines (identifies) column y.
Full functional dependence applies to tables with composite keys. Column Y in relational table R is fully functional on X of R if it is functionally dependent on X and not functionally dependent upon any subset of X. Full functional dependence means that when a primary key is composite, made of two or more columns, then the other columns must be identified by the entire key and not just some of the columns that make up the key.
Overview
Simply stated, normalization is the process of removing redundant data from relational tables by decomposing (splitting) a relational table into smaller tables by projection. The goal is to have only primary keys on the left hand side of a functional dependency. In order to be correct, decomposition must be lossless. That is, the new tables can be recombined by a natural join to recreate the original table without creating any spurious or redundant data.
Sample Data
Data taken from Date [Date90] is used to illustrate the process of normalization. A company obtains parts from a number of suppliers. Each supplier is located in one city. A city can have more than one supplier located there and each city has a status code associated with it. Each supplier may provide many parts. The company creates a simple relational table to store this information that can be expressed in relational notation as:
FIRST (s#, status, city, p#, qty)
where
s# supplier identifcation number (this is the primary key)
status status code assigned to city
city name of city where supplier is located
p# part number of part supplied
qty> quantity of parts supplied to date
In order to uniquely associate quantity supplied (qty) with part (p#) and supplier (s#), a composite primary key composed of s# and p# is used.
First Normal Form
A relational table, by definition, is in first normal form. All values of the columns are atomic. That is, they contain no repeating values. Figure1 shows the table FIRST in 1NF.

Although the table FIRST is in 1NF it contains redundant data. For example, information about the supplier's location and the location's status have to be repeated for every part supplied. Redundancy causes what are called update anomalies. Update anomalies are problems that arise when information is inserted, deleted, or updated. For example, the following anomalies could occur in FIRST:
* INSERT. The fact that a certain supplier (s5) is located in a particular city (Athens) cannot be added until they supplied a part.
* DELETE. If a row is deleted, then not only is the information about quantity and part lost but also information about the supplier.
* UPDATE. If supplier s1 moved from London to New York, then six rows would have to be updated with this new information.
Second Normal Form
The definition of second normal form states that only tables with composite primary keys can be in 1NF but not in 2NF.
A relational table is in second normal form 2NF if it is in 1NF and every non-key column is fully dependent upon the primary key.
That is, every non-key column must be dependent upon the entire primary key. FIRST is in 1NF but not in 2NF because status and city are functionally dependent upon only on the column s# of the composite key (s#, p#). This can be illustrated by listing the functional dependencies in the table:

The process for transforming a 1NF table to 2NF is:
1. Identify any determinants other than the composite key, and the columns they determine.
2. Create and name a new table for each determinant and the unique columns it determines.
3. Move the determined columns from the original table to the new table. The determinate becomes the primary key of the new table.
4. Delete the columns you just moved from the original table except for the determinate which will serve as a foreign key.
5. The original table may be renamed to maintain semantic meaning.
To transform FIRST into 2NF we move the columns s#, status, and city to a new table called SECOND. The column s# becomes the primary key of this new table. The results are shown below in Figure 2.

Tables in 2NF but not in 3NF still contain modification anomalies. In the example of SECOND, they are:
INSERT. The fact that a particular city has a certain status (Rome has a status of 50) cannot be inserted until there is a supplier in the city.
DELETE. Deleting any row in SUPPLIER destroys the status information about the city as well as the association between supplier and city.
Third Normal Form
The third normal form requires that all columns in a relational table are dependent only upon the primary key. A more formal definition is:
A relational table is in third normal form (3NF) if it is already in 2NF and every non-key column is non transitively dependent upon its primary key. In other words, all nonkey attributes are functionally dependent only upon the primary key.
Table PARTS is already in 3NF. The non-key column, qty, is fully dependent upon the primary key (s#, p#). SUPPLIER is in 2NF but not in 3NF because it contains a transitive dependency. A transitive dependency is occurs when a non-key column that is a determinant of the primary key is the determinate of other columns. The concept of a transitive dependency can be illustrated by showing the functional dependencies in SUPPLIER:

Note that SUPPLIER.status is determined both by the primary key s# and the non-key column city. The process of transforming a table into 3NF is:

Status is deleted from the original table, city is left behind to serve as a foreign key to CITY_STATUS, and the original table is renamed to SUPPLIER_CITY to reflect its semantic meaning. The results are shown in Figure 3 below.

Advantages of Third Normal Form

Simply stated, normalization is the process of removing redundant data from relational tables by decomposing (splitting) a relational table into smaller tables by projection. The goal is to have only primary keys on the left hand side of a functional dependency. In order to be correct, decomposition must be lossless. That is, the new tables can be recombined by a natural join to recreate the original table without creating any spurious or redundant data.
Sample Data
Data taken from Date [Date90] is used to illustrate the process of normalization. A company obtains parts from a number of suppliers. Each supplier is located in one city. A city can have more than one supplier located there and each city has a status code associated with it. Each supplier may provide many parts. The company creates a simple relational table to store this information that can be expressed in relational notation as:
FIRST (s#, status, city, p#, qty)
where
s# supplier identifcation number (this is the primary key)
status status code assigned to city
city name of city where supplier is located
p# part number of part supplied
qty> quantity of parts supplied to date
In order to uniquely associate quantity supplied (qty) with part (p#) and supplier (s#), a composite primary key composed of s# and p# is used.
First Normal Form
A relational table, by definition, is in first normal form. All values of the columns are atomic. That is, they contain no repeating values. Figure1 shows the table FIRST in 1NF.

Although the table FIRST is in 1NF it contains redundant data. For example, information about the supplier's location and the location's status have to be repeated for every part supplied. Redundancy causes what are called update anomalies. Update anomalies are problems that arise when information is inserted, deleted, or updated. For example, the following anomalies could occur in FIRST:
* INSERT. The fact that a certain supplier (s5) is located in a particular city (Athens) cannot be added until they supplied a part.
* DELETE. If a row is deleted, then not only is the information about quantity and part lost but also information about the supplier.
* UPDATE. If supplier s1 moved from London to New York, then six rows would have to be updated with this new information.
Second Normal Form
The definition of second normal form states that only tables with composite primary keys can be in 1NF but not in 2NF.
A relational table is in second normal form 2NF if it is in 1NF and every non-key column is fully dependent upon the primary key.
That is, every non-key column must be dependent upon the entire primary key. FIRST is in 1NF but not in 2NF because status and city are functionally dependent upon only on the column s# of the composite key (s#, p#). This can be illustrated by listing the functional dependencies in the table:

The process for transforming a 1NF table to 2NF is:
1. Identify any determinants other than the composite key, and the columns they determine.
2. Create and name a new table for each determinant and the unique columns it determines.
3. Move the determined columns from the original table to the new table. The determinate becomes the primary key of the new table.
4. Delete the columns you just moved from the original table except for the determinate which will serve as a foreign key.
5. The original table may be renamed to maintain semantic meaning.
To transform FIRST into 2NF we move the columns s#, status, and city to a new table called SECOND. The column s# becomes the primary key of this new table. The results are shown below in Figure 2.

Tables in 2NF but not in 3NF still contain modification anomalies. In the example of SECOND, they are:
INSERT. The fact that a particular city has a certain status (Rome has a status of 50) cannot be inserted until there is a supplier in the city.
DELETE. Deleting any row in SUPPLIER destroys the status information about the city as well as the association between supplier and city.
Third Normal Form
The third normal form requires that all columns in a relational table are dependent only upon the primary key. A more formal definition is:
A relational table is in third normal form (3NF) if it is already in 2NF and every non-key column is non transitively dependent upon its primary key. In other words, all nonkey attributes are functionally dependent only upon the primary key.
Table PARTS is already in 3NF. The non-key column, qty, is fully dependent upon the primary key (s#, p#). SUPPLIER is in 2NF but not in 3NF because it contains a transitive dependency. A transitive dependency is occurs when a non-key column that is a determinant of the primary key is the determinate of other columns. The concept of a transitive dependency can be illustrated by showing the functional dependencies in SUPPLIER:
SUPPLIER.s#
—> SUPPLIER.status
SUPPLIER.s#
—> SUPPLIER.city
SUPPLIER.city
—> SUPPLIER.status
Note that SUPPLIER.status is determined both by the primary key s# and the non-key column city. The process of transforming a table into 3NF is:
1.

To transform SUPPLIER into 3NF, we create a new table called CITY_STATUS and move the columns city and status into it. Status is deleted from the original table, city is left behind to serve as a foreign key to CITY_STATUS, and the original table is renamed to SUPPLIER_CITY to reflect its semantic meaning. The results are shown in Figure 3 below.

Advantages of Third Normal Form
The advantage of having relational tables in 3NF is that it eliminates redundant data which in turn saves space and reduces manipulation anomalies. For example, the improvements to our sample database are:
INSERT. Facts about the status of a city, Rome has a status of 50, can be added even though there is not supplier in that city. Likewise, facts about new suppliers can be added even though they have not yet supplied parts.
DELETE. Information about parts supplied can be deleted without destroying information about a supplier or a city. UPDATE. Changing the location of a supplier or the status of a city requires modifying only one row.

Why can’t we have virtual constructors but can have virtual destructors?
Ans- The ‘virtual’ mechanism works on a logically complete (completely constructed) object. We know that we use constructors to logically initialize our objects. In other words, the object is not completely constructed until the constructor has finished executing. Thus, we can’t have virtual constructors.
There is a misconception that by then virtual table is incomplete so we can’t have virtual constructors. Just before the constructor starts executing the virtual table is properly constructed and the ‘this’ pointer passed to the constructors. Moreover, virtual table mechanism is implementation depended, and finds no place in the C++ standard. And hence, to argue over this issue using the virtual table concept is illogical.
Now, as the constructor finishes executing any other function can be virtual. Destructor is no exception to this rule as it is a function. Virtual destructors are required in case we use a base class pointer to refer to a derived class object, use it, and then delete it. If we have virtual destructor, using ‘delete’, a chain of destructors is called starting from the derived to the base. But, had there been no ‘virtual’ in destructor only the base class destructor is called (and not the derived). This (may) generate inconsistencies in the program.

NEW DELHI: Hewlett-Packard India on Thursday launched a 20-inch-screen entertainment notebook ‘The Dragon’, HP TouchSmart personal computer and HP iPAQ 512 Voice Messenger smartphone.
Priced at Rs. 1.10 lakh onwards, the HP Pavilion HDX 2000 Series the Dragon has all the vital desktop features with the freedom of a notebook PC. It offers multimedia and is capable of high resolution and provided a complete audio experience. It has a dockable media centre remote for TV control.
Similarly, HP TouchSmart comes with a 19 inch ‘BrightView’ touchcreen and a space-saving design. It has a unique one-touch-access interface, while the ‘HP SmartCenter’ has a host of interesting applications such as the HP SmartCalendar and the HP Photosmart, besides having enhanced the storage space of 320 GB, integrated high-performance stereo speakers and microphone. It is priced at Rs.99,990 on wards.
Through the HP iPAQ 512 Voice Messenger smartphone, voice e-mail can be send, while the Voice Commander is used to read e-mails and SMS. It is loaded with host productivity boosting features like the Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.0 with push e-mail and office applications. Priced at Rs. 14,000, it also has the built-in camera, MP3 player and Video Recorder. The company launched Pavilion Slimline s3000 series PC with many innovative features and is priced at Rs. 39,900 onwards.
Speaking at a press conference here, HP India President (Personal Systems Group) Ravi Swaminathan said: “HP has maintained a clear leadership in the Indian PC space quarter-on-quarter across categories.
The introduction of the new range will further strengthen our wide-ranging lifestyle portfolio and will help us grow the lifestyle computing market by around 50 per cent this fiscal.”
The company also plans to expand its retail footprint across 500 cities and expand the retail partner network to over 2,000 by the end of the current financial year, he added.

Astronaut Sunita Williams Sets the Record Straight, and Long

After six years of people, three of whom have been women, living in space aboard the International Space Station, the female time-in-space endurance record set 11 years ago has been broken.
And it was broken in a single flight.

NASA Astronaut Sunita Williams set a new record this morning at 12:47 CDT for the longest duration spaceflight by a woman. At that time, Williams surpassed Shannon Lucid’s mark of 188 days, 4 hours set in 1996.
Williams began her record-setting flight when she launched with the crew of STS-116 in December 2006. The Massachusetts native remained onboard the station as a member of the Expedition 14 crew and then joined the Expedition 15 crew in April. Her spaceflight will come to a close when she returns to Earth aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis with the STS-117 crew.
Although this is only her first spaceflight, Williams also became the record-holder for most hours outside a spacecraft by a female by completing four spacewalks during Expedition 14 with a total time of 29 hours, 17 minutes.
ISS014-E-09992 : Sunita Williams conducts spacewalk “It was very exciting to watch her spacewalks and to watch her accumulate more spacewalk time than any other female in the universe,” said Lucid, who set the previous female space duration record while flying aboard the Russian Mir Space Station. “These [long-term] flights are providing the needed confidence so that some day in the near future we can depart low-Earth orbit and head on out to Mars.”

During her stay on orbit, Williams has worked with experiments across a wide variety of fields, including human life sciences, physical sciences and Earth observation as well as education and technology demonstrations.
Some of these experiments give scientists critical insight into the effects of weightlessness on our bodies while others show ways to prevent effects we already know about like muscle and bone loss.
In addition to rigorous exercise, Williams also collected and stored her blood while in space to add to an ongoing study on nutrition, another key element of living in space for long stretches of time.
The results of this study may impact nutritional requirements and food systems developed for future ventures in space. “Her mission has been critically important to our overall space program,” said NASA Astronaut Eileen Collins, another female pioneer in spaceflight. Collins became the first woman to command a spaceflight mission during the STS-93 mission on Space Shuttle Columbia.
“She truly is a space marathoner who shows young women everywhere that there's a place in the space program for them.” If her stay in space concludes as scheduled, with her return on Atlantis on June 21, Williams will have flown a total of 194 days in space.

Bad Weather Pushes STS-117 Landing to Friday

The STS-117 crew is getting an extra day in space thanks to poor weather conditions at Kennedy Space Center, Fla. Space shuttle Atlantis has five landing opportunities available Friday, with the first at 2:18 p.m. EDT in Florida.
Thunderstorms in the vicinity of Kennedy forced flight controllers to wave off both opportunities Thursday. Controllers and the Spaceflight Meteorology Group will closely monitor forecasts for Friday’s opportunities in Florida and at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
The first opportunity Friday is on Orbit 218 and calls for a deorbit burn at 1:12 p.m. The second is on Orbit 219, with the deorbit burn at 2:50 p.m. and landing at 3:55 p.m. at Kennedy.
If Florida weather does not cooperate, three opportunities are available at Edwards. The first is on Orbit 219. Thursday afternoon, the crew adjusted Atlantis’ orbit to set the stage for this opportunity, which has the deorbit burn occurring at 2:43 p.m. and landing at 3:49 p.m.
The second opportunity for the California base is on Orbit 220. The deorbit burn would occur at 4:18 p.m. and landing at 5:23 p.m. The final opportunity is one orbit later which calls for the deorbit burn to occur at 5:56 p.m. and landing at 6:59 p.m.
Friday’s weather forecast for Kennedy calls for the threat of thunderstorms in the area and high winds are a possibility at Edwards. Opportunities are also available Saturday.
Atlantis launched June 8 and arrived at the International Space Station on June 10. While at the orbital outpost, the crew installed the Starboard 3 and 4 truss segment and conducted four spacewalks to activate it. During the third spacewalk, the crew repaired an out of position thermal blanket on the left orbital maneuvering system pod.
Atlantis also delivered a new station crew member, Flight Engineer Clayton Anderson. He replaced astronaut Suni Williams, who is the new record holder for a long-duration single spaceflight for a woman. She arrived at the station in December with STS-116.
STS-117 is the 118th shuttle mission and 21st mission to visit the space station. The next mission, STS-118, is slated to launch in August.

Story
sivajiSivaji (Rajnikant) is an NRI millionaire with an ambition of starting a hospital-cum-medical college for providing free education and medical help to the poor people in India. His ambition is foiled by a local kingpin (Suman). Sivaji gets questioned by the authorities and dragged onto the street because of the ruthless political system. That is when he realizes that a state like AP has around 46,000 crores as black money. He collects data and robs the black money from rich people and sends the money to USA through hawala route to get it distributed into small denominations by his NRI friends. The same amount is routed back to India in the form of donations to the charity foundation run by Sivaji. There by he virtually runs an alternate government by using the black money, helps the poor and develops infrastructure. However, the CBI is hell bent on getting evidence to arrest him for his economic violations. The rest of the story is all about how he evades the cops, eliminates the kingpin and continues serving the society.
Artists Performance
dubaiseenuRajnikanth: Rajnikant is a treat to your eyes. He looks extremely charming even in some of the weirdest get-ups. His walking style, mannerisms, get-ups and expressions are fantastic. What is more surprising is his body language and dances. The way he imitated the dancing styles of ANR, NTR and Chiranjeevi are excellent.
sivajiOthers: Shriya is pretty good as the female lead. Nayana Tara sizzled in an item song. Suman is competent as the villain. Vivek is neat as hero's associate. Raghuvaran did a small yet important role. Stunt master Kamal Kannan appeared as himself. Manivannan and others are adequate.
Technical Departments:
dubaiseenuStory: Story of the film is a typical Robin Hood kind of one. Rob black money from filthily rich people and distribute it to the poor and needy. The fascinating aspect about this story is orientation of black money. The suggestions given when title cards were rolling were great ideas. If Government abolishes the use 500 and 1000 notes and all the black money would come out. He also suggested the compulsory use of money card (similar to pan card with electronic features) where one has to produce it while purchasing costly items.
sivajiScreenplay - direction: Shankar is always known for mixing entertainment with purposeful message. He also tried the same thing with this film. But he had to add some other aspect called heroism to his recipe. By concentrating more on the love thread between hero and heroine in the first half, he missed his commercial formula. The mechanism in which he makes hero convert black money into white is good. The 'office' treatment is also good. If you observe all Shankar's films, there is always a strong motive for hero get the ultimate urge to help society (hero’s brother death in Gentleman, Hero's daughter death in Bharateeyudu, hero's sister death in Aparichitudu etc). But here we find no reason that prompted hero to develop the strong urge to help society. The following two points are unconvincing, more so because these two points are turning points to the movie -
1. Sivaji accepting that he bribed the officials to get permissions.
2. The CBI arresting Sivaji even without knowing what is there in the laptop (as the data in laptop is locked by a voice-recognition security system)
dubaiseenuOther departments: The dialogues by Sri Rama Krishna are very good. Cinematography by KV Anand is an asset. Music by AR Rehman is adequate. On the picturization part, the second songs and the last song are extremely good. The main highlight of the film is Rajnikant dancing to Premabhishekam (ANR), Aaku Chatu (NTR) and Abba Nee Tiyyani (Chiranjeevi) with perfect body language. The fights of the film are adequate. The fight in music shop did not go well. Art work by Thota Tharani is good. The production values by AVM are lavish.
sivajiAnalysis: First half of the film is little slow. There is momentum in the second half. The entire modus operandi of converting black money into white money is pretty intelligent. The plus points are Rajnikant and the main story concept of black money. On the flipside, director could not blend the story point uniformly into the story line. The screenplay should have been better. The much needed emotional impact is missing. The runtime of the film is pretty long (more than 3 hours). The name of Shankar itself is enough to get great openings and when a superstar like Rajnikant acting in Shankar's film, the expectations are unprecedented. You might want to watch it without any expectations.

Suggested approach to the SCJP test
If you have to start with your preparation for SCJP then I suggest to follow the following guidelines and steps ---
Give a mock test now ( try Jxam ) and see where you stand. If you get 90% and above means you don't need much preparation and a month might be sufficient, anything around 80% means brushing up the Java skills from a book and anything less than 70% means you need hard work.
I would suggest to brush through Java 2 Certification Study Guide by Simon Roberts, Philip Heller. It will give you a solid foundation to work on. For more Books click here....
Once you are through R&H, I would suggest to give a few more mock exams, try some online ones ... ( at the sites I have mentioned ).
If you feel your are more JAVA hungry and you are looking forward to a top notch score of 90+ in SCJP I would strongly recommend to go through the book The Java Language Specification (Java Series) by James Gosling, Bill Joy, Guy L., Jr. Steele. To download a soft copy of the same from the sun site go here .....
In the last but not the least read the Java DOCs for the API's and packages like java.lang, java.awt , java.awt.event e.t.c. You can download a softcopy of the Java Docs from here ...
Thats it !!@##@ it will hardly take a month if you can donate about 3 hours daily to the preparation. It sounds so simple doesn't it, mind you the test is not that simple or is it ?? go find out for youself, just be prepared.
I believe you should only give the SCJP test when you start getting 90%+ in the mock tests if you want to achieve a high score in SCJP.
And yeah !! don't try to rush things because you can't produce a baby in one month by putting in nine ladies or can you ?? Take your time and be confident before attempting the test.

11 tecniques to increase your page views of your blog....

1. Highlight Related Posts - one of the more common practices of bloggers to encourage readers to read multiple pages on their blogs is to to highlight related posts at the end of your article. You’ll notice that i presently have a list of 5 posts at the end of each individual page that suggests other posts that readers might find useful This list is generated by a WordPress PlugIn. Those of you using other blog platforms might find similar plugins for your own system or might like to manually suggest related articles at the end of your posts.
2. Interlink within Posts - a similar but perhaps more effective technique is to highlight relevant posts within the content of your posts. If you’re writing a post that mentions something similar to what you’ve written before simply link to your previous post from within your article. For example I’ve written about this technique previously in a post on increasing the longevity of key posts.
3. Highlight Key Posts and Categories in your Blog’s Hotspots - I’ve often mentioned that the hottest posts on this blog are those highlighted in my top three menus. Specifically it is those in the top left hand box at the top of this page that are always at the top of my most read post statistics. Depending upon the goals of your blog - you may wish to fill your blog’s hotspots with ads or affiliate programs - or you may want to highlight key posts that are central to your blog and which will hook readers into what your blog is about (thereby increasing page views). Highlighting your category pages is also another similarly useful technique to encourage your readers to find more posts on the same topic. To explicitly name what your category is can also be useful. ie rather than just having the category name at the end of the post - try something like ‘read more posts like this in our ((insert category name)) category’ or ‘filed under ((insert category name))’ etc.
4. Compilation Pages - Extending the previous idea about highlighting key posts you may wish to use posts in these positions that sneeze readers not just to one post on your blog but many. The best example of this on ProBlogger is my Top 20 Posts at ProBlogger post which is in my top left hand menu. This post, as the name suggests, suggests 20 posts on my blog that readers might like to read. I know that this is a post with immense power on this blog and that many first time readers use it to bounce into all corners of my blog. One or two new readers have fed back to me that this page and the pages that it linked to was the reason that they became hooked on ProBlogger. Every post they read added to the chances that they would become loyal readers.
5. Series - While you need to be a bit careful with writing series of posts over periods of time, they are a great way to keep readers coming back and once they are complete to have them surf through multiple pages on your blog. The most popular series on this blog is my Adsense for Bloggers series which leads readers through 8 posts. I know many readers progress through this series because I occasionally get a series of comments from a reader who is obviously progressing through it - 8 comments over 30 minutes or so as they comment on each post. Don’t just do a series for the sake of increasing page views of course - this can really frustrate readers but use them on longer posts or when you’re genuinely wanting to interact with a larger topic over time.
6. Excerpts on Front Pages - I know there are a segment of ProBlogger readers that detest seeing excerpts (extended entry feature) on blog front pages and are very cynical that it’s just a ploy to get more page views. While I personally like using excerpts on front pages it is not about page views for me (although I guess it is a side benefit of it). Personally using excerpts in this way is more about keeping my front page manageable and highlighting multiple posts on the front page. ie if a reader can come to my blog and see not only the last post but the title of the second and maybe even the third post then they are more likely to explore more than just the last thing you’ve written. I tend to only use the extended entry feature on longer articles and allow shorter ones of a paragraph or two go up on the main page - unless I either forget or see the post as an important one.
7. Excerpts in RSS- Once again there is always debate over this topic of full or partial RSS feeds. I know some bloggers main purpose in partial feeds is to get bloggers directly onto their blog - thereby increasing their impression/page view count. While this is certainly a benefit of partial feeds it is not my own reason for using them. Rather I use them for copyright protection and to stop people scraping my full content onto their site’s via RSS. Whatever reason you choose to use partial/excerpt feeds - you should also realize that doing so will cause some readers to unsubscribe to your blog completely. I know in going only with partial feeds that there are some other bloggers who refuse to visit my blog - this is a cost/benefit scenario that individual bloggers need to weigh up.
8. Enable links in RSS Feeds - Another way that I know a couple of bloggers use to get RSS readers to actually surf to their blogs is to enable the ability to post html/links in their RSS and then using links to previous posts in their blog, especially in the first paragraph or two of their posts. This is not a technique I’ve tried but I know of one blogger who swears by it and says it significantly impacted the number of visitors to his blog from RSS as well as the number of pages that they viewed.
9. Search Function - most blog blog platforms have the ability to use a search feature on your blog which enables users to search your blog for keywords. This feature obviously helps your readers to locate other posts on your site and as a result increases the potential for a multiple page view visit.
10. Build an Interactive Blog - one way to get readers coming back to your blog many times over a day is to have a blog that people want to interact with. I know some ProBlogger readers visit this site at least 10 times per day just so that they can engage in the conversation that happens in comments. Since I added the ’subscribe to comments’ feature on this blog I’ve noticed some readers coming even more than normal - this can only be increasing page view levels as people return throughout the day. I’ve written (some time ago now) a few ideas on interactive blogging here and here.
11. Quality Content -This should go without saying but needs to be reinforced. Obviously if you write quality content your readers will want more of the same. Useful, original and interesting content should leave your readers hungering for more. Work on the quality of your blog and you’ll find that things like traffic levels and the numbers of pages being read should look after themselves and be on the rise.

Personally using excerpts in this way is more about keeping my front page manageable and highlighting multiple posts on the front page. ie if a reader can come to my blog and see not only the last post but the title of the second and maybe even the third post then they are more likely to explore more than just the last thing you’ve written. I tend to only use the extended entry feature on longer articles and allow shorter ones of a paragraph or two go up on the main page - unless I either forget or see the post as an important one.
7. Excerpts in RSS- Once again there is always debate over this topic of full or partial RSS feeds. I know some bloggers main purpose in partial feeds is to get bloggers directly onto their blog - thereby increasing their impression/page view count. While this is certainly a benefit of partial feeds it is not my own reason for using them. Rather I use them for copyright protection and to stop people scraping my full content onto their site’s via RSS. Whatever reason you choose to use partial/excerpt feeds - you should also realize that doing so will cause some readers to unsubscribe to your blog completely. I know in going only with partial feeds that there are some other bloggers who refuse to visit my blog - this is a cost/benefit scenario that individual bloggers need to weigh up.
8. Enable links in RSS Feeds - Another way that I know a couple of bloggers use to get RSS readers to actually surf to their blogs is to enable the ability to post html/links in their RSS and then using links to previous posts in their blog, especially in the first paragraph or two of their posts. This is not a technique I’ve tried but I know of one blogger who swears by it and says it significantly impacted the number of visitors to his blog from RSS as well as the number of pages that they viewed.
9. Search Function - most blog blog platforms have the ability to use a search feature on your blog which enables users to search your blog for keywords. This feature obviously helps your readers to locate other posts on your site and as a result increases the potential for a multiple page view visit.
10. Build an Interactive Blog - one way to get readers coming back to your blog many times over a day is to have a blog that people want to interact with. I know some ProBlogger readers visit this site at least 10 times per day just so that they can engage in the conversation that happens in comments. Since I added the ’subscribe to comments’ feature on this blog I’ve noticed some readers coming even more than normal - this can only be increasing page view levels as people return throughout the day. 11. Quality Content -This should go without saying but needs to be reinforced. Obviously if you write quality content your readers will want more of the same. Useful, original and interesting content should leave your readers hungering for more. Work on the quality of your blog and you’ll find that things like traffic levels and the numbers of pages being read should look after themselves and be on the rise.
